Leaky gut is a popular label for intestinal permeability. Crohn's and ulcerative colitis involve real barrier and immune problems that specialists already treat. Multi-step online protocols with long supplement lists are not a substitute for IBD guidelines.
Permeability versus protocol culture
Research studies measure barrier function; social media sells 30-day stacks and food fear.
- Increased permeability can occur with inflammation; treating disease activity is the clinical priority
- Random L-glutamine, zinc, and herbal stacks need safety review, especially on immunosuppression
- Extreme elimination can cause malnutrition and food-related anxiety
- Calprotectin, CRP, and scopes guide IBD care more than DIY leaky gut quizzes
- IBS-style diets may help overlapping symptoms but do not equal curing IBD
Evidence-aligned next steps
- Bring symptom and stool logs to your gastroenterologist instead of starting a protocol alone
- Ask before adding supplements that claim to seal the gut
- Use dietitian-guided plans such as supervised FODMAP trials when IBS overlap is present
- Focus on vaccination, infection precautions, and medicine adherence as advised
Education only. Barrier science is real; unregulated leaky gut cures are not standard IBD therapy.
When to seek care promptly
- Fever with rapid decline on unmonitored supplements
- Severe bleeding or black stools
- Inability to eat after aggressive elimination
This page cannot diagnose you. Severe bleeding, black tarry stools, fainting, fever with rapid decline, or inability to keep fluids down need urgent evaluation. See when to go to the ER and flare help.
Common myths
- A leaky gut protocol replaces biologics. Dangerous and false.
- Everyone with IBD has the same 12 food toxins. Triggers are individual; testing belongs with clinicians.
- Permeability teas heal ulcers. No substitute for prescribed care and monitoring.
Questions for your gastroenterologist
