High Calprotectin: What It Means and What Happens Next

A high fecal calprotectin result usually points toward intestinal inflammation, but it is not a complete diagnosis by itself. NSAIDs, infections, and sampling issues can raise values too.

How clinicians use the number

Calprotectin is a neutrophil protein measured in stool.

• Helps distinguish inflammatory activity from some IBS-like symptoms
• Trends over time often matter more than one isolated value
• Cutoffs differ by lab; use your report's reference range
• May prompt endoscopy, imaging, or therapy changes
• Does not tell exact disease location alone

• Ask whether to repeat after holding NSAIDs if appropriate
• List infections, recent colonoscopy prep, or incomplete samples
• Prepare symptom timeline for the follow-up visit
• Do not stop biologics on your own because of one number
